- Differences Between Latin American and Castilian Spanish
There are several differences between the two, but here are the most prominent and the ones you need to take note of.
- Vosotros/Vosotras and Vuestro(s)/Vuestra(s)
- In Spain, vosotros/vosotras is used when referring to a group of informal people. It is the informal form for "you all" (also known as "you (plural)"; in this case, "you (plural informal)"). Ustedes is only used when one is referring to a group of formal people. Vuestro(s)/vuestra(s) is used similarly; it means "your" for the plural informal "you".
- In Latin America, usually only ustedes is used.
- Pronunciation of c and z
- In Spain, when a c appears before i and e, it is pronounced similar to a combination of the English /th/ and /f/. This is the same for z - only it is always pronounced that way, not only when it appears before i and e.
- For example, corazón (heart) is pronounced "corathón" and información (information) is pronounced "informathión".
- In Latin America, c and z are pronounced similar to the English /s/.
- For example, corazón (heart) is pronounced "corasón" and información (information) is pronounced "informasión".
